Automating Power Management Reduces Costs & Promotes A Greener Facility

Lake Geneva, WI – March 25, 2010 – All organizations can now save money and improve facility operations efficiency while helping the environment, by automatically powering down idle devices that would otherwise draw power in standby mode. Companies that desire the benefits of facility automation, without the expense of a full-blown facility overhaul now have a practical alternative.

Some analysts believe that up to 5% of total US power consumption goes to devices that seem to be turned “off” but are actually in standby mode. It’s a problem with personal computers, monitors, printers, copiers and other office equipment, as well as manufacturing lines and assembly equipment that consume standby power. Over time, standby power usage is a significant and unnecessary cost, in terms of both dollars and carbon emissions. Mike O’Brien, Primex Wireless Director of Product Development, points out that “Primex Wireless can completely eliminate this power drain, for both plug-in and directly wired equipment.”

Primex Wireless has expanded its Synchronous Network System (SNS) platform by adding innovative new devices for software-controlled power management. Primex Intelligent Power Management uses outlet controllers that can be configured to manage power consumption at night, on weekends and during holidays, through a secure Web-based interface. The software can be controlled remotely, and it communicates with each outlet on an individual or grouped zone basis.

This new automated power management solution directly reduces operational costs by saving energy, and it can also help by reducing labor associated with equipment management overhead. Outlet controllers are available for both Wi-Fi and Ethernet networks, so there’s no need to run additional network cables. That also means the outlet controllers are easy to relocate and re-purpose as a company’s hardware environment evolves. This technology is ideal for small to medium businesses, including education, manufacturing and health care. Furthermore, larger organizations gain value by automating power control for the dispersed and vast amount of office equipment which is not traditionally managed within building automation. “It’s squarely intended for niche deployment in those parts of a facility that aren’t covered by traditional automation systems,” says O’Brien.

The Primex Wireless SNS offering already supports software-controlled clocks, sensors and bell scheduling equipment, recording key diagnostic information and sending proactive maintenance alerts. The addition of a power management option leverages the same infrastructure for an even greater return on investment. Primex Intelligent Power Management represents a significant new capability for the Primex Wireless SNS platform.
